Guru Ghasidas University (GGU) was setup in June 1983. It is an active member of the Association of Indian Universities and Association of Commonwealth Universities and has been accredited as B+ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

The University is named after the great visionary saint Guru Ghasidas, who championed the cause of the downtrodden and waged a relentless struggle against all forms of social evils and injustice prevailing in the society.

The University is a residential cum affiliating institution, having its jurisdiction spread over Bilaspur Revenue Division of the state of Chhattisgarh.

The academic activities at University almost cover the entire spectrum of higher education. It has University Teaching Departments (UTD) and about 125 affiliated colleges offering a wide variety of courses in streams of Arts, Commerce, Education, Engineering & Technology, Law and Humanities, Life Sciences, Management, Medicine, Pharmacy, Sciences, Social Sciences, etc.

The university campus at Bilaspur is a sprawling 875acre land situated on the outskirts on Bilaspur Ratanpur highway. An extension campus was started at Ambikapur in 2005.
